Putnam City High School to Retire Steve Largent’s Jersey at October 25th Home Game

Putnam City High School is pleased to welcome home and honor one of its distinguished alumni, Steve Largent, by retiring his jersey during the home game against Stillwater on Friday, October 25th. With Steve Largent present, the ceremony will take place at halftime of the game, scheduled to kick off at 7:00 PM.

Steve Largent, a 1972 graduate of Putnam City High School, went on to become one of the greatest wide receivers in NFL history. During his time at Putnam City, Largent showcased his athletic talent, leading the Pirates in football and setting the foundation for what would be a legendary career.

After graduating from the University of Tulsa, Largent was selected in the 4th round of the 1976 NFL Draft by the Houston Oilers, but his career took off when he was traded to the Seattle Seahawks during their inaugural season. Largent became the face of the Seahawks franchise for over a decade, earning seven Pro Bowl selections and setting numerous NFL records along the way. Largent was the first receiver in NFL history to reach 100 touchdown receptions, and at the time of his retirement in 1989, he held all the major career receiving records. His achievements were recognized when he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1995.

Beyond his illustrious football career, Largent also made a significant impact off the field, serving as a U.S. Congressman for Oklahoma's 1st district from 1994 to 2002.

Putnam City High School is proud to retire Steve Largent’s jersey in recognition of his contributions to both athletics and public service. His career serves as an inspiration to our current and future students, demonstrating the heights that hard work and dedication can achieve.

Oklahoma residents and the Putnam City community are invited to attend the home game and special halftime ceremony to celebrate the legacy of one of Oklahoma's finest athletes.
